Overview

Maker’s Asylum is a community maker-space that provides tools like 3D printers, laser engravers, CNC machines,  wood-shop, metal-shop, and interactive electronics labs. It is used by makers, technology + design enthusiasts, innovators, hardware entrepreneurs, designers, artists, and students to make stuff happen. It’s easy to access tools, technology, and talent so they can prototype their ideas. For problem-solvers, it’s a space to bump ideas with other like and unlike-minded folks who share a  passion for learning and building and share knowledge.

My Job role

As the Space-manager and Head of Operations, my responsibilities were

  • to maintain the machines and organize events/training for 3D printing, laser, and power tools during the Rapid Prototyping sessions and S.T.E.A.M School in collaboration with the French Embassy and CRI France.

  • Build groups are an integral aspect of a maker-space as it helps bring makers of varied interests together and foster a sense of learning through collaborating and building each other's projects.

Laser Cutter Machine Training

This training included using the laser cutter. I taught students 2D modelling for making models that are compatible with the laser cutter to make interesting projects happen. Students were also taught to use the laser cutter, it's basic maintenance, setup and operation.

3D Printing Machine Training

Students of various age groups and backgrounds would attend the 3D printing training where I would cover topics like 3D modelling, slicing software, operation, maintenance, setup and use of a various array of FDM 3D printers. Children played a significant role in these sessions as they were led by great imagination, excitement and curiosity.

Power Tool Training

The power tool training consisted of teaching students how to use power tools safely and efficiently. This is a high-risk training so I would ensure to go through every aspect of a wide variety of woodworking and metalworking tool operation, maintenance and usage. These workshops would also include arc welding training to give the students a holistic exercise of making, breaking and creating.
